Two important trends have materialized since the last edition. Radio LANs are being decoupled from the RF terminals of the same suppliers. This trend ultimately will enable one Radio LAN to service diverse types of data devices from many and varied suppliers. Lack of upper layer standards remains the only major impediment to such Radio LAN interoperability.

The second trend is a retreat from the Target Protocol Dependent Radio LAN architectural approach that became popular in 1995. While the retreat is and will continue to be slow, the return to Controller Protocol Dependent architecture is essential for satisfying the capacity and response time performance requirements of Radio LANs used for transaction processing.
